WHY
The increase in traffic volumes in the past several years has increased both traffic congestion and the duration of the peak traffic period on Route 101 within the City of Santa Rosa. Since Route 101 is the primary north-south travel artery in Sonoma County, reducing traffic congestion in the entire corridor is a vital component in accommodating continued growth. The Route 101 Widening (HOV) Projects involves Route 12 from the S. Santa Rosa Overhead to the Route 12/101 Separation and on Route 101 from the Earle Street Pedestrian Overcrossing to the Steel Lane Undercrossing and will consist of 3 stages taking place over a 2 ½ year period.

The increase in traffic volumes in the past several years has increased traffic congestion and the duration of the peak traffic period on Route 101 within the City of Santa Rosa. Since Route 101 is the primary north-south artery in Sonoma County, reducing traffic congestion is vital to the entire corridor, as growth continues. The proposed project improvements would provide a segment of the High Occupancy Vehicle lane system on Route 101 that will reduce traffic delays and encourage carpooling.

WHAT
The main activity of this project is to widen sections of Santa Rosa’s Highway 101 from 4 lanes to 6 lanes.

Other features of these projects include:
• Construct a collector-distributor road on northbound Route 101 between Route 12 and 3rd Street
• Construct auxiliary lanes between College Avenue and Steele Lane
• Extend existing southbound auxiliary lane between College Avenue and downtown Santa Rosa to Route 12
• Replace Santa Rosa Creek Bridge
• Replace existing pedestrian overcrossing (POC) with a new pedestrian undercrossing at Santa Rosa Creek Bridge
• Construct new undercrossing at 6th Street
• Construct soundwalls at locations warranted by Noise Study
• Replace College Avenue undercrossing
• Replace Steele Lane undercrossing
• Construct retaining walls at various locations
