Walking

If you are travelling short distances, walking is the most basic--and the easiest--commute alternative to driving alone.

Of all the ways to get to work, school, or around to do errands, there's a convenient and reliable form of transportation that is often overlooked: your own two feet. Walking can be a great commute choice for short distances, or as part of a longer commute. And whether you walk to work once a week or every day, it's a relaxing, easy, and inexpensive choice. Walking to work is not just for city residents. You can walk at least part of the way to work even if you must cross a bridge or take transit to reach your job.

If you walk to work, sign up for the “Take a Free Ride” program and receive a free movie ticket for every 8 days you walk!

Attention Walkers! The Prince Memorial Greenway will be closed for construction from June 15 - October 15, 2006. Once construction begins, please find a safe, alternative route!

Tips for a Successful Walk:

  • Warm up your “engine” - Stretch your body gently an slowly (calf and Achilles, hamstrings, quadriceps, an side)
  • Start your walk slowly, work up to a brisk pace, then slow down for the last five minutes.
  • Drink some water before and after walking
  • Wear comfortable clothes.
  • Dress in loose-fitting layers. Add or remove them to control your body temperature.
  • Leave home prepared for a change in weather.
  • Be visible. By day, wear light, bright or florescent colors. In bad weather or at night, wear reflective material.
  • Use feet-friendly footwear. Good fit: give your toes wiggle room, but keep ‘em snug enough to prevent blisters. Support: avoid tired arches that make feet sore. Air flow: footwear needs to breathe so your feet can. Cushy feel: Foam-cushioned insoles and thick, flexible soles make feel happy.
  • Relax.
  • Walk with a friend.
  • Make it fun! Look around. See what you miss when you drive.
  • Put your feet up when you get home, especially if you stand a lot during the workday.
